Strong character development in an adult-leaning YA world. When a relatively earthbound mystery develops, the world of the school becomes a bit thinned out–but that’s also when the dialogue for character interactions becomes stronger, so there’s some compensation. This is a wicked spin on Harry Potteresque special-kids-go-to-a-special-school formula, played out at the length of a long novella, and I couldn’t put it down even as I wished there were aspects written with more substance. I’m definitely not regretting that I picked this up, though I’m not certain I’m keen for more in a series.
