I want to express my gratitude to so many friends who’ve shared their love and support with my family in the past few weeks, with visits to see my mother in her last days, food for our large contingent, entertainment for our kids, cars to get us around, beds to sleep in, hugs and kisses and phone calls and emails and Facebook messages and prayers and thoughts and vibes, everything. You’ve truly lightened our burden, made us remember how much we are loved, how much my mother was loved. Amidst our sadness, we’ve felt love and peace.
This is one of my favorite hymns, “Be Still, My Soul,” with original words by Katharina von Schlegel (translated by Jean Borthwick) and music by Jean Sibelius. This version, sung by the Libera boys choir, combines two verses, omits another, and is especially appropriate for our situation. At my request, the Notre Dame of Mount Carmel choir sang it during communion at my mother’s funeral Mass last week.
